"Moses Is Coming"

Ontario

As whispers of "Moses is coming" rang through the ears of the passengers aboard the Underground Railroad, eyes lit up, knowing that General Tubman would arrive soon and guide them along paths of liberty all the way to the promise land of freedom. Harriet Tubman was known as Moses by her people because, like the Biblical figure, she delivered them unto freedom. Moses would say to her passengers, "The wind blows from the south today," which meant that bounty hunters were nearby, so extra caution needed to be taken. Flooded with bounty hunters and bloodhounds looking for escaped fugitives, borders between slave states and free states were terrifying and dangerous. General Tubman always traveled with weapons and would stop at nothing to keep her precious "cargo" safe from harm's way. Considered untouchable by her enemies, wherever General Tubman went, her people would ask her to guide them to freedom.

After fleeing from bondage herself, General Tubman made 19 trips back into southern states to rescue others. Considered to be the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad, General Tubman's rescue missions led more than 70 enslaved people up from the South and into the Promised Land. Journey with us now and learn more about the paths of liberty and how "conductors" like General Harriet Tubman assisted thousands along the famous Underground Railroad.
