Renting a U-Haul truck is simple, and you can do it in the way that works best for you. You can either reserve a truck in the U-Haul App, book online at uhaul.com, handle it over the phone, or stop by a nearby U-Haul location.

With the U-Haul App, you can rent a U-Haul truck any time of day, 365 days a year through U-Haul Truck Share 24/7®!

No matter which way you rent, you’ll want your physical driver’s license, an alternate contact, second form of ID (credit/debit card), and a payment method ready so pickup goes smoothly.

Before You Rent: What You’ll Need

A little prep up front can make pickup day easy. Make sure to have all the right documents ready before renting your U-Haul truck. To rent a U-Haul truck, you must be at least 18 years old and present a valid government-issued driver’s license. You’ll also need a second form of identification, such as an alternate contact, credit/debit card or a passport.

Using U-Haul Truck Share 24/7

For U-Haul Truck Share 24/7, you’ll also need a phone with the U-Haul app for identity verification steps (such as taking photos of yourself and your Drivers License).

Adding Extra Drivers to Your Truck Rental

U-Haul does not charge extra for additional drivers, but any additional driver must meet the same requirements (a valid driver’s license, at least 18 years old, and a second form of ID).

Be sure you bring:

  • Your driver’s license
  • A second form of ID
  • Your payment method (more on payment options below)

Tip: You can rent without a reservation at many locations, but availability may be limited, so reserving ahead is still the safer bet.

Option 4: Rent Over the Phone

If you’d rather talk through truck size, dates, and pickup details, you can book by phone. Phone support details vary by location.

  • Customer support number: 1-800-GO-U-HAUL (1-800-468-4285)

This phone number will connect you with an experienced live customer service representative who can help you with all your moving questions.

Payment Options: Card, Cash, Check, and Deposits

Don’t worry if you have questions about how to pay for your truck rental; here’s the straightforward version and everything you need based on your payment method.

Credit or Debit Cards

  • To reserve online, U-Haul requires a major credit or debit card.
  • If you’re renting a cargo van or pickup truck, a major credit or debit card is required at pickup and will be authorized at that time.

Paying with Cash

Cash is allowed, but a deposit is required at pickup when renting with cash. If you are paying with cash, this process must be done in-store.

Deposit amounts (when paying with cash at pickup):

  • In-town truck: $100 or estimated rental charges (whichever is greater)
  • One-way truck: $100 plus the rental rate

If you rent with a credit or debit card, no deposit is required, and you can still choose to pay in cash when you return the equipment.

Truck Rental Pickup Day Tips That Make Everything Easier

Here are some tips that can save you time at the counter and in the parking lot:

  • Confirm your pickup location and time before you arrive (especially on busy weekends).
  • Build in a few extra minutes for a walkaround check of the truck.
  • If you’re towing, confirm the right equipment and bring your own straps as needed.
