How to Pack a Bathroom for Moving
One of the main things to know about packing a bathroom for moving is that it helps to back this room last, or close to last in relation to the other rooms in your house. There’s a good chance you and your family will need essential toiletries and a place to wash on moving day, so start with larger rooms with less ‘essentials’ like the living room, kitchen and garage. That way, you can use the restroom and shower as you normally would on moving day if need be.
With that in mind, you can slowly but surely pack your bathroom by following these five easy steps.
1. Acquire recommended packing supplies
Like most rooms, packing your bathroom starts with gathering the recommended packing supplies from your local U-Haul location.
Recommended packings supplies:
- Small and Medium Moving Boxes
- Packing Paper
- Mirror & Picture Box
- Picture Packer Kit
- Box / Packaging Paper Tape
- Box Markers with Knife
- Cushion Foam Pouches
2. Sort and purge your bathroom items
No matter the room, it always helps to get your belongings organized before you begin packing. Not only will this help you pack more efficiently, it also will allow you to plan your move better.
For the bathroom, start by sorting your belongings into categories (toiletries, cosmetics, medicine, linens, cleaning supplies, etc.). Then go through each category and discard anything you no longer use or need. Look out for expired, empty or dried-out containers liquid especially.
With everything sorted and purged, you can plan how you’re going to pack; starting with the least essential items and finishing with the most essential. Remember to leave toilet paper, soap and a hand towel in the restroom until the final few moments you’re in your old home.
3. Pack a “bathroom essentials” bag
Speaking of essentials, we recommend having each member of the family pack their own bathroom essentials bag before packing anything else. The bag should include anything they might need on the final day at your old home and the first day at your new home; toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, deodorant, makeup, etc. It’s possible you won’t be able to get to your bathroom boxes right away when you arrive at your space, so consider that when putting your essentials bag together.
4. Pack décor and knickknacks
This step depends on how much extra stuff you have in your bathroom. If you’re the hardcore decorator type, grab a few moving boxes, the Packing Paper and some Cushion Foam Pouches and get started. For fragile items, wrap each in a pouch and/or packing paper and placed them in your boxes. Use hand towels, bath mats and other linens to pad these items and fill the extra space in your boxes.
Packing framed objects
You may have framed photos or small mirrors hanging in your bathroom. If so, make use of the Mirror & Picture Box and Picture Packing Kit to pack these items carefully. Both boxes are designed to stabilize and cushion framed glass items for moving or storage. Another useful tip is to make an ‘X’ out of Box Tape on the glass surface to prevent shattering should your box topple or drop for any reason.
5. Pack your cleaning supplies/bathroom supplies
Packing the liquid items in your bathroom requires a bit more planning and care than the other items as you want to avoid spills of any kind. If you are hiring movers, you also need to determine if there are any cleaning supplies that shouldn’t be packed, as professional movers cannot move these types of items by law.
Hazardous bathroom materials movers can’t move:
- Bleach
- Aerosol cans
- Disinfectants
- Acids/ammonia
- Nail polish/nail polish remover
How to pack cleaning supplies
If you are taking the DIY route, you can pack and move cleaning supplies all you want, just do so carefully. Remember to seal the lids tight and place each container in a plastic bag that’s either tied or taped shut, then pack in a sturdy Medium Moving Box and label accordingly. Try to pack these items upright as well so there is a minimal chance of spilling during the move.
Don’t forget: you probably need to clean your bathroom(s) before you move out, so try to leave some cleaning supplies behind and pack them after you’ve done your final cleaning.
How to pack toiletries and bathroom supplies
Packing toiletries and other bathroom supplies can be tough, as these are typically small in size but large in quantity. But if you’ve already sorted your bathroom supplies, it shouldn’t be too painful. Use a Small Box for your toiletries and other liquid bathroom supplies. You may also want to line any box containing a liquid product with a towel just in case.
Liquid, bottled products
Seal the lids tight and place the bottles in a plastic grocery or zippered plastic bag. If you don’t have bags on hand, you can put a strip of tape around the lids to close tightly. Try packing these items upright where possible.
Bathroom appliances
Hair dryers, clippers and other bathroom electronics and appliances should be packed in their original packaging if you still have it. If not, wrap each appliance in packing paper, seal it with tape and pack in a Small Moving Box.
Toothpaste and tubed products
There isn’t much you can do for these items other than seal them tight, pack them in a plastic bag and place the bag in a Small Box. Since toothpaste, creams and lotions are thicker liquids, there is less risk of spills.
