Reserving a Moving Truck: What Are the Rental Requirements
Last Updated:
Renting a moving truck is easier when you know what to expect. Before you head out, here are a few things to keep in mind and prepare to make your rental experience smooth and stress-free. Here is what you should expect and prepare for when renting a truck.
What You Need to Rent a Moving Truck
Valid Driver’s License
To rent a U-Haul, you must show a current, government-issued driver’s license that isn’t expired. U-Haul accepts licenses from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces. If you’re from another country, U-Haul may accept your foreign license if it’s in English. Otherwise, bring an International Driving Permit plus your original license and passport.
Additional Identification
Besides your license, you must bring a second form of ID (ex: U.S. passport, military ID, or employer identification).
If you’re using U-Haul Truck Share 24/7, you’ll also need a smartphone with the U-Haul app for identity verification, including taking photos of your ID and submitting contact information.
Payment Method
You’ll need a major credit or debit card in your name to reserve or pay for your truck.
If you’re renting a cargo van or pickup truck, a major credit or debit card is required at pickup and will be authorized at that time.
If you’d rather pay in cash, that’s allowed too, but a deposit will be required when you pick up your equipment. If you rent with either a credit or debit card, you can still pay in cash when you return the equipment without a deposit.
- In-town truck: $100 or estimated rental charges (whichever is greater)
- One-way truck: $100 plus the rental rate
Most customers prefer using a card, as it is usually faster and more cost-effective.
Adding Additional Drivers
Many rental companies charge extra for additional drivers, but U-Haul does not. If someone else helps drive the truck, they must meet the same requirements: hold a valid license, be at least 18 years of age, and present a second form of ID.
