Do I Really Need U-Haul Insurance?
You know what they say: accidents happen! The important thing is making sure you’re prepared when they do. When you’re moving, your entire life is packed up into a moving truck or portable storage container, so it’s vital to make sure you’re covered.
U-Haul offers a few different insurance options for you, your belongings, and our equipment. Let’s break down what we cover:
How Does U-Haul Insurance Work?
At U-Haul, we know that people move in all kinds of ways, so we try to be prepared for anything! We offer different forms of insurance for our rental products, like our moving trucks, U-Box containers, trailers, and storage units.
Types of U-Haul Insurance
Safemove

Does U-Haul Insurance Cover Damage to Other Vehicles?
Safemove Plus provides coverage for damage to your rental and any damage done to another vehicle.
Does U-Haul Insurance Cover Damage to My Stuff?
We’ll help cover damage or lost items if they’re harmed in collision, fire, windstorm and overturn of the rental truck. But if your truck is stolen or if the damage comes from improper packing or the shifting of cargo, that won’t be covered.
Safetrip
Need help on the road? With Safetrip you can receive help with:
- Jump starts
- Lost Keys
- Fuel service
- Struck vehicle
- Trailer hook-up issues
- Starts at $5 for in-town rentals, $7 for one-way moves
Safehaul
While U-Box containers are super easy and convenient, U-Haul is not responsible for any damage caused by 3rd party shipping carriers. Investing in Safehaul is the easiest way to protect your belongings in transit.
Safestor
When you’re in between homes, or just have too much space, storage can be an excellent solution. And with Safestor, you have an added layer of peace of mind. This low-cost insurance covers the loss or damage of your items from incidents like:
- Natural disaster (e.g. fire, earthquake, floods)
- Vandalism or burglary
- Vermin
Does My Renters or Homeowners Insurance Cover Damage to My Storage Unit?
Typically, your homeowner or renter insurance policy will extend to your items in storage, but only up to a certain amount. On top of this, there could be some exclusions in coverage. To be sure, give your insurance provider a call to double check.
How Much Is U-Haul Insurance?
U-Haul insurance can vary in cost depending on the coverage you choose and your current location. To know for sure, give your local U-Haul center a call to find out what your area’s specific rates are!
Can I Just Stick to My Personal Insurance?
Unfortunately, most auto insurance policies won’t cover large cargo vehicles like a moving truck, cargo van, or trailers and vehicles over a certain weight. You’ll have to double check with your insurance provider to make sure, but don’t just assume you’ll be covered! And even if you are, you’ll still be on the hook to reimburse U-Haul for the full damage amount upon return.
So, whether you’re driving, shipping, or just trying to store your extra items, consider signing up for U-Haul insurance! In most cases, coverage can start as low as $15, but protection is priceless. Don’t put it off, sign up today!
