How to Load an ATV on a U-Haul Car Trailer

Before you can hit the trails on your ATV, you need to transport it. The U-Haul Auto Transport (or car trailer) is a convenient and cost-effective solution for hauling an ATV. Loading an ATV onto a U-Haul car trailer requires careful planning and execution to ensure a safe and secure journey. In this guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of loading your ATV onto a U-Haul car trailer.

1. Measure Your ATV

To begin, you should measure your ATV and compare its dimensions with those of the trailer to ensure a safe fit. When measuring your ATV, make sure to measure the width of the track both inside and outside. We recommend measuring the front and back track width separately, as the front and back can be different sizes. You’ll also need to measure the wheel base from center to center.

2. Compare ATV Dimensions to Trailer Dimensions

Use the following U-Haul car trailer measurements to confirm that your ATV matches up:

  • Minimum width: 41 inches
  • Maximum width: 79 inches
  • Maximum length: 148 inches

Double-check that your vehicle can handle the weight you're towing. To do this, simply add the weight of your ATV to the weight of the car trailer (which is 2,190 lb.), and make sure this total doesn't exceed your tow vehicle's tow rating. If you're not sure about your ATV's weight, you can easily find that information online. Just search for the exact make and model of your ATV to get the correct weight.

Use the example below:

Trailer weight: 2,190 lbs
Polaris RZR weight: 1,235 lbs
Tow system capacity: 5,000 lb
Combined: 2,190 lbs + 1,235 lbs = 3,425 lbs
3,425 lbs < 5,000 lbs = safe to tow!

3. Load Your ATV on the Trailer

Engage the parking brake on the tow vehicle, then lower the ramps on the car trailer. When loading the ATV, take it slow, and consider getting someone to help you navigate. Important: for safety reasons, always load your trailer with the heavier side in the rear. The weight ratio should be approximately 60-40 from front to rear. When loading an ATV (or any vehicle), the engine side should be loaded first.

4. Strap the Wheels and Security Chain

To securely fasten the tires, grab the tire straps and position them around the tires. Make sure they are centered properly. Now, take the ratchet spool and center it around the middle of the tire. Insert the strap into the ratchet spool and give it a good tightening. Repeat this process on the other side. Next, it's time to install the security chains. For a reliable connection point, the D-Ring usually does the trick. Repeat this step for the rear tires as well.

5. Double the Check Straps

Remember to push the ramps back up. It’s recommend you double check the tire straps after driving about five miles.

That’s it! When you follow these directions, you’ll ready to safely haul your ATV anywhere adventure takes you. Visit our vehicle towing page to get a quote and star your Auto Transport reservation today!
