Full-Service Moving vs. Moving Containers

Last Updated:

If you’re planning a move in the near future, there’s a lot to consider. From finding a new place, to packing, and figuring out all the logistics, moving can be challenging. Here at U-Haul, we’ve been helping people move for 80 years. As trusted moving experts, we’ll walk you through the key differences between two popular moving services: full-service movers and portable moving containers.

The right moving service for you ultimately comes down to your budget, timeline, and overall moving needs. Since moving container companies frequently offer packing and moving labor, full-service movers won’t be necessary for most people.

Cost

If affordability is one of your priorities, moving containers are more economical than full-service movers. Even if you want the full convenience of packing and moving labor, many moving container brands provide these options, and at a lower cost than traditional moving companies. The cost differences boil down to the flexibility moving containers provide, versus the established structure of full-service movers.

Here’s a breakdown of the pricing and service differences with moving containers and full-service movers:

Convenience

The effort your move takes will vary greatly depending on what services you choose. For those who opt to pack and load their containers themselves, moving containers will be more of a DIY effort. Combining moving labor with moving containers takes less of your time and energy, just like with full-service moving.

Storage is an important factor to consider as well. If you need storage during your move, moving containers make the process so much easier! U-Box® containers by U-Haul even include one month of storage.

Without moving containers, you have to move your things into a storage unit, pay separately for the unit, then move your things from storage to your new home. Essentially, moving becomes double the effort. Moving containers are highly efficient, allowing you to store your items mid-move while only having to move them once.

Timeline & Process

Both moving containers and full-service providers estimate time frames for pickup and delivery. The timelines for shipping are comparable for each of the two services, ranging from a few days to a few weeks. However, moving containers provide more flexibility since you can have your items stored for as long as you need before delivery.

The process with full-service movers involves:

  1. You book your move.
  2. Full-service movers arrive and pack your items, or you pack beforehand.
  3. Movers load your belongings into their moving truck.
  4. Your items are transported to your final destination via truck.
  5. Movers unload your items, and often unpack them as well.

When it comes to moving containers the process involves:

  1. You book your move.
  2. Your moving containers are delivered to your home.
  3. You pack your items and load them into the container, or hire services for these tasks.
  4. The moving containers are picked up and transported to either a storage facility, or your final destination.
  5. You unload the containers and unpack your items, or hire services to help.
  6. Your containers are picked up.

Safety

One of the main concerns people have when relocating (especially long-distance) is if their items will arrive safely and in one piece. Whichever service you choose, both full-service movers and moving containers allow you to adequately protect your items. Each U-Box container comes with 24 rental furniture pads to wrap and protect your belongings while they’re in transit.

Some people are more comfortable packing their own items, while others prefer leaving it to the pros. It typically takes longer if you take the DIY route and pack your own items, but you’ll save money on labor. If you’re short on time or unsure about how to pack properly, opt for packing services from your moving container company or full-service movers.

How to Decide Between Full-Service Movers and Moving Containers

  • Moving containers are better for: those looking to save on costs, and those with storage needs.
  • Full-service moving is better for: moves with very tight timelines, and difficult-to-move items such as pianos
