Making Room in Your Dorm

Jan 15, 2014

Dorm life

Moving into a dorm not only makes you realize how much stuff you have, but it also makes you stay organized.  Making room in your dorm is important because there is no room for hoarding or disorganization,  unless you want to sleep on a pile of clutter. You also have to keep in mind that you are in close quarters with a roommate, and need to respect their space.  With that being said you must learn to get creative with the room you do have. Here are ways to maximize your space!

Raise the Bed

A bed takes up the most space in a dorm which is why you need to make the most out of it. At most colleges you can ask to have your bed either lofted or raised if it hasn’t been already. When they loft your bed it leaves room to put furniture like a a desk or futon  underneath your bed. If you raise your bed manually or use bed risers, you can fit storage containers, space bags, a shoe rack or drawers underneath your bed as well.  You can even make your own under-the-bed organizer out of those empty boxes  you used to move in with.

No matter how small your room is, you always have enough room for your shoe collection! If you have your bed raised you can stuff a storage container or shoe rack underneath to house your shoes. If you prefer to keep them in their original boxes you can do that as well and stack them up and hide them under your bed. The more that you can hide under your bed, the more spacious your dorm will appear!

Pack that Closet

Closet space can be utilized in many ways. Double up your hangers with a plain t-shirt underneath a jacket or cardigan. This gives you more space for hangers and has your outfits ready to go. Another tip is to hang multiple scarfs on one hanger; this keeps them untangled and organized but doesn’t cost too much space. After each season, you can pack the clothes you no longer need in space bags and place them underneath your bed.

A coat rack is another great place to also hang your coats and scarfs to prevent wrinkling . A multi-use coat rack is perfect for storing hats, purses or even hold a few magazines. The best part about these racks is that they don’t take up too much room!

If you live in an region that requires you to have some seasonal gear (Ski coats, snowboard, etc..) you may want to consider renting a small storage locker, or using  Collegeboxes shipping services. Depending on your school,  Collegeboxes has options that allow you to ship your belongings home or to have them stored at their warehouse for a reasonable price.  They even have free pick-up and delivery at most schools at the beginning and end of each semester.
