How to Make Friends in College

How to Make Friends in CollegeFor most, college years are some of the best years of your life, but just because college will be fun doesn’t mean that it will be easy. Everything (clubs, homework, studying, etc.) will be twice as hard and time-consuming. The trick to college is learning how to manage your academic life with your social life, without having to sacrifice sleep along the way. And by social life I’m not referring to just going out with friends, but also school events, dinners, and Netflix marathons with the roomies. College is the time where most find one of their lifelong BFF’s, so here are some tips on how to make friends in college.

Get involved

How can you meet people (besides your roommate) when you’re cooped up in your dorm? It’s predictable that you might get homesick in the first few months without your family, which is precisely why it is important to make a new friends. Get out, go to as many freshmen welcome events as you can! Rush for a sorority or fraternity! Greek life is not for everyone, so you might find a club or organization that is.  Find ways you can volunteer or give back! You’d be surprised how much you have in common with these strangers.

How to Make Friends in CollegeGo to sporting events

Maybe in high school you were that kid who was too cool for school spirit or school events, but believe me, you don’t want to be that kid in college or you’ll end up missing out! College sporting events scream school pride and you are bound to have fun being part of the sea of students cheering on your own team. Check out when the first football game is and round up some of the students on your floor to head over to the game together.

Go to ALL events

Sooner than later, your floor’s community assistant will start pestering you with invitations to all sorts of events going on in your residential halls. Even if themed karaoke nights aren’t your thing, give it a whirl to see who else lives your floor. Who knows, maybe by the end of the night you may have made a few new friends!

How to Make Friends in CollegeGo on a day trip

So you’ve managed to reel in some friends, now what? Well nothing shows what people are really about like spending a little one-on-one time with them on the road. Head out for a day trip to a scenic park for a short hike and picnic.

Overall, just get out there! It might not be as easy for everyone, but you don’t have anything to lose and everything to gain. And remember, every other newbie is on the same boat.
