Christmas Tree Ornaments out of Moving Supplies

Dec 6, 2014

christmas tree ornamentsDecorating the Christmas tree is often a family tradition, so why not make ornament-making a tradition too? These ornaments can be made out of basic moving supplies and a few items from the craft store, and they’re easy enough for the kids to make!

What You’ll Need:

How to make a DIY star ornament

  • Cardboard box
  • Paint
  • Glitter
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Paint brush
  • Star cutout
  • Small bowl

Step 1: Cut

Print and cut out a star on a piece of paper and trace onto cardboard (we used an old moving box). Trace as many stars as you want to decorate your tree with. Cut out each shape from the cardboard.

Step 2: Paint

Pick your favorite color (I chose a metallic gold) and cover both sides of the stars with the paint. I did three coats to ensure coverage, just remember to allow a couple of minutes in between each coat to dry!

Step 3: Sparkle!

Before you let the last coat of paint dry, place your star in a bowl and cover with as much glitter as you like. The glitter will then stick to the paint as it dries. For this step, I only glittered one side of each star, but feel free to do both.

Step 4: Thread

After the glitter has dried, cut a piece of thread about 7 inches long. Loop the thread through the holes in the interior cardboard and tie a knot so that the string makes a loop.

Step 5: Hang!

Everyone knows that the best part of Christmas is decorating the tree. Put on your favorite Christmas tunes, and begin to  spread your glittered stars evenly throughout the tree and watch them sparkle!

How did your ornaments turn out? Did you try making them in any other colors or shapes? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below!
