So you’re moving to The City of Bridges! Known for its museums, parks and rich culture, you’re in for an adventure! Before moving to Pittsburgh, there are some things you should know:
Rental Equipment
When it comes to choosing your rental equipment, take these considerations into account before making your choice. Pittsburgh streets are very narrow and hilly. With all similar cities, I would recommend choosing the smallest moving truck your move can allow for. You will be able to maneuver a smaller moving truck in these city streets. Fear not, even if you have a big move, there are tips on how to drive a 26 foot truck! In addition, you’re going to become accustomed to street or parallel parking, if you aren’t already!
Neighborhoods
Steel City is a city of neighborhoods. A few to note:
- Oakland: a neighborhood of arts and education. This city is where you’ll find the Carnegie Museums of Art and History as well as the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning. Look out for college-age folks here.
- South Side: There’s an eclectic vibe here. Visit Pittsburgh says you can find bars, restaurants, museums, and concert venues here. “You can also get a tattoo, dye your hair purple and hoist a yard, making for some of the best people-watching around.” The best thing is that all of this is in walking distance of each other.
- South Side Works: If you want shopping, this is the neighborhood to go to.

What to Do
If you’re moving to Pittsburgh, you should know off that bat that sports are important. They’re a big deal. In the fall and winter seasons, get ready to root for the Steelers at Heinz Field! Through the fall and spring seasons- you’ll be watching the Penguins at Consol Energy Center. Last, but not least: the Pirates. You’ll get to see them play at PNC Park, one of our must-see baseball stadiums!
If you’re not a sports fan, fear not! There’s plenty of other things to do in Pittsburgh. If architecture is your thing, take in the sites of the city. Pittsburgh has some of the most beautiful churches, theaters, and historical buildings. Take a trek an hour outside of the city to see some of Frank Lloyd Wright‘s works. There are notable museums in this city such as the Carnegie Museums of Art and History. Make sure you take the time to see the city from above at The Duquesne Incline!
