Winter Storage

Winter Storage. What seasonal items do you put in self-storage?Seasons change, and now it is time to think about winter storage. You have limited space in your home, and you will probably have more need for sweaters and snow shovels than swim suits and picnic baskets. Here are some things you might want to consider for winter storage.

Summer Clothes – It is sad that you can no longer wear those cute summer clothes you looked so good in, but look on the bright side, it is time to wear those warm comfortable sweaters and that awesome jacket you missed during the summer.  If your closet it limited in space it may be a good idea to take those out-of-season clothes and send them off to storage, after all you won’t be wearing them for a while.

How do you store your bike in the winterBicycles – Most people don’t really want to be out biking on roads covered in ice and snow. On top of that, if you store your bike outside, do you want it to get rusted from the harsh winter elements? Winter storage is a great option for your bike.

Gas Powered Equipment – With the coming of cold weather you probably don’t have to spend every weekend mowing your lawn. To store your gas powered lawn mower, first, you want to drain all of the gas from the tank. Then, you want to run it  until the engine stops. You want to do this for a couple of reasons. First, the ethanol in gasoline starts to break down after a couple of months and can wreak havoc on your equipment. Second, U-Haul storage locations do not allow you to have flammable liquids such as gasoline in your storage unit. This holds true for dirt bikes, jet skis, or whatever gas powered equipment you may want to put in winter storage.

Winter Break – Winter means it is time for winter break for all of those college students out there. If you are living in the dorms, or plan on changing housing for the spring semester, then you might want to get a small storage unit over your winter break. There are a variety of sizes of storage units to fit the amount of stuff you have. If you don’t have a lot of items to store you should consider College Boxes. They will deliver boxes to your dorm, pick them up when you are all packed and then they can ship them wherever you want or deliver them back to you when you start school again.

Heated or Climate Controlled storage units are great for winter storageHeated or Unheated – Climate control is something to consider as well, especially for winter storage. U-Haul Self-Storage offers both heated and unheated rooms, depending on your need and the location. If you are storing anything that can be damaged by the cold, you probably want to look for an interior storage unit that is heated or climate controlled. This blog post will give you an idea of whether or not your items should be in climate controlled self-storage units.
