Vehicle was not prepped prior to pick up. In fact the battery was dead and required two jump starts to start the vehicle. In addition, the dealer mis-marked the fuel in the vehicle as having a half a tank when the vehicle had less than half a tank. I would never rent from this facility againJohn S.

For all I know, the person who operates this franchise is trying hard and doing the best he can. However, the place is a shambles: it looks like a post-disaster scene from a horror flick about a calamity in a small town. When I arrived, no one was present despite my arrival being within posted opening hours. Behind a door labeled "do not let dogs out" were three large nervously barking dogs--hardly a welcoming committee. When I called the proprietor, he indicated that he was out on a service call and couldn't come for an unspecified period of time. When asked how I could get a receipt proving that I had left the truck, he said "whatever U-Haul sends you," an answer that hardly inspires confidence. If U-Haul is going to use small-town businesses, it should provide training and uphold standards.Kevin C.

The man who owns the location was friendly and helpful. My biggest and only complaint I have is with Uhaul corporate. I made my reservation well ahead of time to pick a truck up locally. The day before my move I am notified by Uhaul that my truck will not be available locally at 7am and will instead be required to drive 75 miles to pick the truck up for 10am. When I made my reservation I designated where and when I wanted to pick up the truck and where and when I would be dropping it off. I was told by the Uhaul representative that they have no idea where trucks will be dropped off and that it was my problem. When organized people are moving they generally have a plan. This inconvenience meant that the help I scheduled for loading the truck in the morning would no longer be available, and the help I scheduled to help unload the truck at my destination was no longer available. The only thing the representative offered was to comp me fuel for the 75 miles of extra driving I had to do which is inadequate but not nothing except, when I go to drop off the truck and the receiving location has no knowledge of that, nor does it cover the fuel cost of driving my personal vehicle 150 miles round trip topick up the truck. All said and done, moving is a difficult endeavor only made worse by Uhauls disorganization. I will go out of my way to not use this company's service again unless provided with monetary compensation. As an aside, this should not reflect poorly on the business I picked the truck up from as it was no fault of his.Alex L.

Rental truck was not there when we arrived despite being "guaranteed" when I ordered it. The manager there was helpful in terms of trying to find out where the closest truck was (which was 100 miles away), however service was overall very slow and the site was really not cleanly. Truck itself was fine once it finally showed up.Amanda K.

You changed terms of rent upon return and charge me almost the $ 1.00 for eachbdriven mile. initial rent agreement was $79.00 for 24 hours to drive from pup location Rockland Maine to Conway NH and return within allocated hours of rent. PIC at rental place was very well aware of that intention as we did discussed terms for the week prior date of rent. I did exercise Uhaul services from 1994 and never experienced such blant treatment on your part. Rental 10ft van with box drove fine, however seats covers were ripped prior to rent, gas tank was less then 3/8 full, while on paper it was 9/16 ...And A/C functioned only at idle and full stop, well Fan did the same. Please comment in how you can chage rent agreement from moment of rent to the return and without any prior notification of such drastic changes ? from 79 $ to 321 $ .. Scary place! Dogs all over, drooling on my feet, the place was filthy, no place to sit, and I didn't even sign anything before he charged my credit card. Everything was a mess with this rentalâ€¦ I was supposed to rent in Portland, went 50 miles away and problem there, drove another 50 miles only to be overcharged and not get the number of miles and days promised. When I called uhaul they gave that to me, only to drop off truck and be charged more! The owner in Brunswick Maine was very nice, as were the gentlemen in rock land but the overall experience was sad.Cynthia T.

We rented 3 trucks from here at 3 different times. My complaint is we were supposed to be able to do the whole process online but your system wouldn't allow us to do that. Instead it told us to e=wait till 9 am. That was frustrating because we had a lot to do and now we had to sit and wait. This happened twice to us. The last truck the key either wouldn't turn or wouldn't get out of the ignition. Shortys was nice but slow it would take almost an hour to check out physically. I also think you charge too much for mileage considering we are already paying to rent the truck and we fill it back up. Speaking of gas each time we rented the trucks they weren't full so we had to estimate putting back ti the same mark. That isn't fair because on our first rental we were charged extra for gas and we put in pass the line it was on when we rented it. All trucks should be full it's to hard for people to try to get it at the exact spot.-hilip M.
My pickup time was at 8AM. No one showed up until after 8:30. It took more than 20 minutes for them to print the paperwork for the rental. The first trailer they brought me had a broken wire so the lights didn't work. The 2nd trailer had a broken wood rail on the inside that that was only attached by the rubber strip. By the time I drove off the lot at 9:17 there were 2 more people who had reserved uhaul waiting.Sara M.

Ok, five stars is a *big* stretch, but I really had a decent experience and it gives me pain that Shorty's gets such poor reviews. The owner--Shorty's son, the joint was established in 1958--was very friendly and clearly a very decent guy, as was his helper. Yes, the place looks like a junkyard, but the truck was fine and I got no grease on myself. Yes, there were a couple of loose dogs, but they were sweet, and not vicious at all, and only one of them tried to jump on me at any time (it failed because another dog came up to say "hi" at the same time and cut it off). It was a bit hard to imagine that the owner used Uhaul's system every day, as it seemed to be a struggle, and took a very long time, but it turned out fine (on the phone making the reservation I had declined the $14 insurance, but when I saw it on the printed contract I was handed I couldn't face waiting longer for it to be taken off, and so just ate it). Shorty's is a fine example of rural Maine car repair (and truck rental) and I hope it prospers for many more years. If you don't mind a little grease, and especially if you like dogs, you may find your experience to be as rewarding as mine. I hope you do.Chris F.

It's in a junkyard. The place is absolutely filthy. The man that was working there was dirty, extremely slow and uncaring. I had a reservation for 8:30 AM when I got there there was one lady ahead of me and I didn't get out till 9:45 AM. I can't state strongly enough how disgusting the place was.Ronald S.

The truck was old, banged up and dirty. I declined extra insurance online but was charged for it anyway onsite. Removing and returning the truck was difficult. It was parked inches from other trucks and was difficult maneuvering in and out.Bruce B.

No one was available when we arrived at our reserved pick up time at the location. After waiting 15 min and calling a cell phone, we were told to come back in, despite loudly barking dogs. The location was filthy and smelly. We are surprised that Uhaul is still using this location as our previous experiences at other locations have been very good!Craig W.

This place is a DUMP. I dropped off my trailer. I received NO PAPERWORK stating I dropped off this trailer when I returned it. A day later I got an emails asking when I was planning on dropping off the trailer, I had to make 3 phones calls to finally get credit for returning the trailer. It doubles as a towing service. and not a full time uhaul. Should have used PENSKE or a POD.Randy B.

Go to person is Steve @ billings rd in warren! He was excellent!! Truck was booked there and due to storm and travel he went out of his way to get it taken to Shorty's for me! Also tried to reach Shorty's to clarify charges to CC and mentioned to Steve I was trying but not heard back, he said probably busy with calls. A few mins later Steve called me with that verification! He is amazing and caring and very professional! A keeper!! Shorty's took over 45 mins to process the paperwork and the business was disgusting!! Filthy! I do appreciate picking up there!! Ty! Uhaul is the way to go!!CherylJ M.
The yard had about 3" of snow, and a moderate hill. I had to hook up the trailer myself at pickup, and unhook it upon return. Upon return there was no sign of the proprietor, but his barking dogs (they were really nice friendly dogs - no complaints there) made sure that if he were around he'd have known I was there.JAYNE S.
