Building History

In 1921 L.S. Lowe founded a humble dry goods, grocery, sewing supplies and building material store called Lowe's North Wilkesboro Hardware. When L.S. passed in 1940, his son, Jim Lowe, took over the store operations. Jim made his brother-in-law, Carl Buchan, a partner in the business.

After World War II, Carl anticipated an increase in domestic construction and re-focused the original family store to specialize in home improvement and building materials. The Lowes home improvement store eventually became a national chain and has been helping DIY (do-it-yourself) customers build their homes and businesses ever since.

The Springdale Lowes location was built in 1970 and served the Springdale community for nearly 24 years before closing. As the leading DIY moving company, U-Haul couldn't let such a signature building stay vacant. U-Haul purchased this location in 1994 and adapted it into a U-Haul dispatch center. This location now continues to serve the Springdale DIY community for its moving and storage needs. By rehabilitating abandoned buildings, U-Haul supports infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction.

Serving U-Haul customers since 1994, this facility was built through adaptive reuse of an abandoned building. Adaptive reuse promotes infill development in an effort to strengthen communities, with the following benefits achieved at this site:
