  • Bytown was founded in September of 1826 and incorporated as a town in 1850. The name of the city changed from Bytown to Ottawa in 1855 because Governor Dalhousie authorized a division of the town into different lots. After more than 150 years, Bytown still remains the cities nickname and is survived by the oldest stone building in the city, the Bytown Museum.
