How U-Haul Reviews WorkExtremely Disappointing Experience with U-Haul Storage — Buyer Beware I had an extremely disappointing experience with this U-Haul storage facility, and I would strongly encourage anyone considering renting a unit here to think twice. I was offered one free month of storage when I rented a moving truck from U-Haul. Due to a recent job loss and the resulting financial hardship, I could no longer afford the $130 monthly storage payment. On May 30, I rented a U-Haul truck and went to move my belongings out of the unit. I was able to move approximately 80% of my belongings but had to return for the remainder because of transportation issues. When I returned two days later, I discovered that a lock had been placed on my unit. I went to the office to speak with the manager. Although she was not physically present, an employee contacted her through a video call. During that conversation, she informed me that because it was already two days into the new month, the facility would not prorate the payment and required me to pay the full $130 monthly fee before I could access my belongings. I explained my situation, but the manager refused to make an exception or allow me to retrieve the rest of my property, despite the fact that I had already rented a moving truck and was there specifically to finish moving out. I had recently lost my job, had no income coming in, and simply did not have the money to pay another full month of storage. What makes this situation even more upsetting is that the manager later claimed during that video call, in front of another employee, that she had previously told me I needed to remove all my belongings. That is simply not what happened. On my first visit, she had come over and removed a lock that had been placed on my unit, but she never said anything to me about needing to remove everything that day or by the following day. She never warned me that I would be required to pay for an entire additional month if I did not finish moving out immediately. Had I been given that information, I would have understood the urgency and could have made different arrangements. Ultimately, all of my belongings were auctioned off, including every piece of furniture I owned and personal items that are irreplaceable. Among those belongings was the only letter I had from my late father. No amount of money can replace something like that. Losing these items has been devastating. I was subsequently told that the facility received only $50 for my belongings. Considering that I had a large suede couch, a huge television, two dressers, and numerous other household items, I find that amount extremely difficult to understand. Regardless of what the items sold for, they represented my entire household and included irreplaceable personal possessions. In my opinion, the way this situation was handled was completely unacceptable. I was already experiencing financial hardship after losing my job, and instead of being given a reasonable opportunity to retrieve the remainder of my property, I was denied access and ultimately lost everything. Throughout this time, monthly storage fees continued to accumulate, even though I had already been struggling to pay the original amount. I was also extremely disappointed by the manager's conduct and professionalism. My interactions with her left me feeling that my situation was not taken seriously and that I was not treated with the level of professionalism and consideration a customer should expect. I also attempted to resolve this matter through U-Haul's corporate office. I contacted Daniel Pierce, whom I understood to be an executive assistant, and spent more than three weeks trying to get someone to address my concerns. Despite those efforts, I never received a phone call back. U-Haul, this was more than the loss of furniture. I lost my entire household, including treasured family keepsakes that can never be replaced. I understand that businesses have policies, but I believe there should be room for reasonable communication and compassion when a customer is facing genuine financial hardship. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this storage facility. I strongly encourage anyone considering using this location to carefully review the storage terms, ask questions about access restrictions and late payments, and make sure they fully understand the consequences of falling behind. I hope U-Haul takes situations like this seriously and improves how it handles customers experiencing financial hardship. I would not want anyone else to experience the same devastating loss that I have experienced.
