How U-Haul Reviews WorkI had a really disappointing experience renting a storage unit at U-Haul, especially considering I’m paying $224 a month. This was my first time renting a storage unit at one of the newer drive-up, electronically accessed facilities, so I called the location about 30 minutes before closing because I did not want to make a mistake trying to do everything online. I was encouraged several times to rent online, but I explained that I had never rented a unit before and needed some guidance. I told them I could be there in about 6 minutes, and they said I could come in. When I arrived, I was immediately told they would be closing in about 15 minutes. I completely understood and said I would make it quick. However, there were three employees working, and I was told that none of them really knew how to rent a storage unit because they had only been working there for approximately 3 days, 7 days, and 2 weeks. At that point, I was willing to complete the rental online if someone could simply explain the process. Instead, I was essentially told they were closing and they weren’t sure how everything worked. I specifically asked whether I would still be able to access the unit after renting it, and I was told yes, until 10 PM. I also asked if I needed a lock and was told yes, so I purchased one there. I rented a medium first-floor unit online and drove to the facility. The garage door opened, but there were no clear instructions or signage explaining what I was supposed to do once inside. I was trying to figure everything out from my paperwork, but I was still confused. There was an intercom/call button, so I tried to use it for assistance. No one answered. When I found my unit, there was a green plastic zip-tie-type device on the door. I also discovered that my rental appeared to include another smaller unit next to it, which I had not understood from the rental process. Again, I tried the intercom because I did not want to remove anything I wasn’t supposed to. No one answered. My friend and I eventually assumed the green device needed to be removed. As soon as she removed it, the alarm went off extremely loudly. It was incredibly embarrassing and completely unnecessary. We tried the intercom again and still could not get anyone to respond. At that point, I called U-Haul customer service from my car. The customer service representative was extremely apologetic and was actually very helpful. She walked me through what I needed to do to access the unit. Once I was able to get inside, I discovered that there were already two locks inside the unit, meaning I never needed to purchase the lock from the facility in the first place. She also told me she would send a message to the manager first thing the next morning and have someone contact me. Nobody ever contacted me. When I returned the following day, I encountered additional things that I had not been told during the rental process, which only added to my frustration. I understand that employees can be new. That is not really my issue. My issue is that three employees were working at a storage facility and none appeared to have been properly trained on how to assist a first-time storage customer. If the location is going to rely heavily on customers completing everything themselves online, there needs to be clear signage and instructions, especially at a facility where the access process is unfamiliar to someone renting for the first time. Most importantly, there should have been someone available to answer the call button/intercom when I was standing inside the facility trying to figure out what I was supposed to do. I also think it’s unacceptable that I was told I needed to purchase a lock when there were already two locks inside the unit. Customer service told me management would contact me, and nobody ever followed up. A simple phone call would have gone a long way. I am paying $224 every month for this unit, and I expected a much better experience. I don’t expect employees to know everything on day one, but I do expect a company charging this much to make sure customers have access to proper instructions, assistance when needed, accurate information about what they need to purchase, and basic follow-up when something goes wrong. Unfortunately, my first experience with U-Haul storage was confusing, embarrassing, frustrating, and ultimately made me feel like I was left to figure everything out on my own.
