ROXANNE WThis isn’t really a review of U-Haul overall—it’s an idea you should seriously consider company-wide. Partner with Google (not Apple, due to device lock-in). Google is reputable, widely supported, and relatively device-independent. Equip each vehicle with a mounted map system that can seamlessly transition from a customer’s phone to the vehicle. A Bluetooth connection would be optimal. The map viewer could double as a customized radio/dash unit, possibly developed in partnership with a car audio/dash component vendor. Critical feature: a simple option to delete all captured phone data with one click—ensuring customer privacy. On top of this, integrate sensors and cameras (optional but valuable), feeding live road and condition data back to the partner system. This creates a dual benefit: For Google (or partner): massive, real-time moving-truck data to strengthen live map updates. For U-Haul customers: Smart Maps that flag unsafe or impractical routes for box trucks—narrow streets, tight alleys, poor turnarounds, etc. Anyone who’s driven a large truck knows the nightmare of getting stuck where they never should’ve gone. This data, collected en masse, could warn drivers and highlight “no-go” areas specifically for U-Haul vehicles. Yes, legal would need plenty of disclaimers, but the payoff would be huge: safety, customer confidence, and a real competitive edge. Frankly, in the age of AI, this feels overdue. U-Haul still has trucks with hand-crank windows—but safety is not a luxury. This would be a genuine value upgrade, a reliability badge of honor, and, let’s be blunt, a market-share grab that translates directly into more revenue. Just a thought.
