How Much Should I Tip My Moving Helper®?

Last Updated:

Hiring moving labor is a smart way to make a DIY move faster and easier. Still, many people have questions about tipping movers once the work is done. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what is customary and what to consider.

How Much Should I Tip Movers?

Generally, you can tip 15 to 20 percent of the total cost, depending on the size of the job, or about $5 to $10 per hour, per mover. Both options are effective.

Consider factors like quality of service and difficulty of the move when determining a tip amount. For example, if your helpers showcase expert levels of care when handling your belongings, or if your move involves many bulky, heavy pieces of furniture, you might consider tipping more. Only you can make that determination, however.

Tipping Per Provider Vs. Overall Percentage

Tipping for a moving service can be done as an overall percentage, like typical tipping at a restaurant. But it's usually calculated by the number of providers who were working. About $5 to $10 per person, per hour is typical for an average sized move. The number can be adjusted depending on the size of your move and the quality of service you received.

Do I Have to Tip Movers?

When hiring any type of moving labor, tipping is never considered mandatory. It's always appreciated after a job well done, however.

Some moving companies don't accept tips and adjust their base prices to account for gratuity. Note that when you book moving labor from the Moving Help® Marketplace, however, the tip is not included in your moving quote.

When’s the Right Time to Tip Movers?

It’s best to tip after your service has been completed. This allows you to adjust the amount based on the quality of the job you received.

If you’re relocating with Moving Help, you have the option to tip on the spot with cash, but you can also choose to tip online through your Customer Account at a later time.

How to Tip Your Movers

Online

To tip your Service Provider online, log into your Customer Account and navigate to the “My Jobs” tab. Once there, find and click the job number in question. From the job itself, click “Write a Review” found under the Service Details section.

Once you have filled out your review, you can then determine how much you would like to tip in the “Tip Helper” field. As a bonus for leaving your Moving Helper a review, you’ll receive your $5.95 Refundable Marketplace Fee back, regardless of tipping.

In Person

If you’re the old-fashioned type, you can tip with cash. If you go the cash route, you might want to have smaller and larger bills on hand in case you want to raise or lower your tip amount based on the quality of service you received.

Non-Monetary

Of course, you’re welcome to show your appreciation in other ways, such as providing refreshments, telling your friends and family about the helpers you selected, writing a great review, or offering lunch.

If your helpers went above and beyond, you’re always welcome to provide a financial tip and a non-monetary show of thanks.
