Hacks for Maximizing Your Storage Space
Shopping around for the perfect storage unit is one thing, but utilizing the space properly is another. You want to maximize your space, protect your items, and most importantly, be able to access them whenever you need.
The way you pack and store your items in a storage unit will have a large impact on how much you can fit in the unit, how well your items will last in storage, and how easy it is to get to them later. Want some tips on how to become a self-storage pro? Here are 12 hacks for getting the most out of your storage unit.
Packing for Storage
- Keep blankets, draperies, and out-of-season clothing on a hanger to save some space!
- Cover furniture with blankets or moving pads. Wrapping in plastic may trap moisture, which can lead to mold or mildew.
- Pro Tip: Want to keep your belongings safe from heat, cold, and moisture? Consider renting a climate-controlled storage room, instead.
- Pack books flat. Leaving them standing may cause damage to the spines. Books are extremely heavy, so don't pack too many in one box.
- Drain gasoline and oil from lawnmowers and other items with small engines.
- Keep old photographs flat by placing them between two pieces of cardboard and tape them together. This prevents the edges from curling!
- Don't overpack boxes. Overfilled boxes will rupture and topple when stacked.
- Make sure you also label every box to ensure you can find things more easily.
- Clean and dry your appliances to avoid any unpleasant surprises later.
- Pro Tip: Storing a refrigerator or freezer? Keep the door slightly ajar and use it as a bonus storage container!
Fill Your Storage Space
- Disassemble furniture to conserve storage space.
- Use shelving to take full advantage of the vertical space.
- When packing your storage room, create a center aisle for access to all items.
- Stack lighter items on top of heavier items, with heaviest on bottom.
- Store items you'll need most often at the front of the unit.
