Jersey City, NJ Moving Tips

A growing arts scene, diverse ethnic dining options, reasonable cost of living, and an influx of educated young people have contributed to the increasing popularity of the city that is known as “Chilltown.” New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country, with Jersey City being its second most populated city. It’s no wonder so many people live here; it has so many great things to offer! For starters, this flourishing state is the second wealthiest in the nation. Although the cost of living is higher than average, the average household income compensates for that at nearly $60,000. When compared to neighboring New York City, the cost of living looks even more appealing. Jersey City is centrally located to some of the best schools in America, with Dr. Ronald E McNair Academic High School in its midst, along with world-renowned Princeton University and Rutgers University just a short drive away. Downtown Jersey City also is home to many large companies such as Goldman Sachs, Barclays, and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Outside of the direct amenities you’ll find within the city, you’ll also have access to all that New York City has to offer without many of the inflated prices. You’ll even be able to enjoy Manhattan’s breathtaking view from downtown Jersey City. Whatever the reason for your move, Jersey City is a great place to start a new chapter in your life.

Tips to Consider Before Your Move to Jersey City

Multiple U-Haul locations populate Jersey City, as well as over 100 other locations in surrounding areas. We have the trucks, equipment, and know-how to help you get settled into your new home.

  • A Melting Pot – New Jersey is extremely diverse, and Jersey City is no exception. The city is home to a wide range of cultures, religions, and ethnicities as one of the most diverse states in the United States. This is something that the state takes pride in. Ellis Island, with deep connections to America’s immigration heritage, is linked to Jersey City’s Liberty State Park. All new residents are welcome!
  • Getting Around – If you do chose to drive yourself, New Jersey has mandatory gas station employees that pump your gas for you, so you don’t have to do it yourself! Be sure to allow plenty of time for the move and always check traffic conditions prior to travel. There is a lot of traffic, especially in the city; in fact, the roads are some of the busiest in the United States. The New Jersey Turnpike is one of the busiest toll roads in the country and extends throughout New Jersey and into the neighboring states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York. Alternatively, Jersey City has extensive public transportation, including the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR), PATH Train, buses, ferries and much more. The PATH train makes it much easier to reach parts of New York City such as Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. The bus lines will also take people through the Lincoln Tunnel to Port Authority on 42nd Street. This can save hours you might spend stuck in traffic.
  • Prepare for Winter – Moving in spring or fall is the most ideal, as it is with most places. However, if you absolutely must move here in the winter, be sure to winterize your vehicle. Check your vehicle for proper fluid levels and make sure your battery is in good condition. Ensure your brakes are functioning correctly and consider winter tires. They’ll make handling your vehicle in snow, sleet, and ice much easier. Rock salt can be used to melt snow in your driveway. For some assistance during your winter move, consider using our MovingHelpers® to avoid any potential issues.
