If first checkin is to be done online then the link needs to last until you get to it. It shouldnt expire before you get a chance to post pictures or verify gas/mileage/tag. I missed first link due to my phone charge failing; got home, put phone on charge, called UHaul for a reset. And then the link wasnt available when my phone had enough charge to come on.
