During my recent trailer pickup, I had a concerning experience that I believe did not align with U-Haul’s published customer service and safety policies. From the beginning, the employee was unfriendly and unhelpful. He took my credit card and then instructed me to go outside to locate and confirm the trailer number and return to provide it to him. I did not feel comfortable being sent outside while my credit card remained in his possession, as this is not consistent with normal customer service or payment-handling expectations. After the paperwork was completed, I was told to hook up the trailer entirely on my own and then return so he could take a photo of the completed hookup. According to U-Haul’s official safety guidance, employees are expected to ensure proper trailer hookup and verify safety connections, not simply supervise from a distance—especially in difficult conditions. While I was following U-Haul’s app instructions and taking the required photos from all four sides, the employee came outside, apparently because he felt I was taking too long. He inspected the connection and noticed that the safety chains were not crossed. Rather than correcting this himself or assisting, he told me that I had to fix it on my own while he stood by and “supervised.” During this interaction, he pointed at his phone and joked that they “require him to take a picture after the hookup,” which felt dismissive and unprofessional. I would also like to emphasize that it was approximately 10°F outside, and the trailer was parked on a frozen asphalt/chip lot, making the hookup process difficult and potentially unsafe to perform alone. Under these conditions, the lack of hands-on assistance was particularly concerning and, in my opinion, inconsistent with U-Haul’s stated commitment to customer safety. Overall, this experience reflected multiple deviations from U-Haul’s service and safety standards, including inadequate assistance with trailer hookup, poor handling of payment security, and a lack of professionalism. I left the location feeling frustrated and uncomfortable, rather than confident and safe with my rental.
VOLKER KDont be 1 hour late or you get charged for an additional day on the dolly, the insurance and the truck... poor taste left in my mouth
ANDREW NI had a reservation at noon for a trailer. I was unfortunately an hour late to pick up (my fault) and the trailer was still buried in snow, not ready for usage, so this delayed my departure. They also added on the rental insurance when I declined it at the time of my booking. I plan to dispute that charge
MICHAEL HWork on your return gas algorithm. I drove 27 miles and didn't leave it running when parked, but when I returned the vehicle they said I had to fill it up with $30 worth of gas to get the gauge back to the beginning level. I noticed it at 3/4 full before I drove away with it, but they said it was 7/8 full at the start. 27 miles for $30 of gas at $2.99/gallon works out to just under 1 mile/gallon... Nothing is that gas thirsty.
