Unveiling Event

On June 15, 2007, U-Haul Company of South Carolina and the U-Haul Media and Public Relations Department teamed up with Friends of the Hunley to unveil the latest SuperGraphic, representing the state of South Carolina. Marketing Company President (MCP) Ray Moore, UHC of South Carolina (Co. 783), spoke to an excited crowd, including state senators and representatives, before the veil was drawn and the SuperGraphic of the recently recovered H.L. Hunley was officially revealed to the public.

The official unveiling was attended by local news stations and newspapers as well as many local dignitaries. MCP Ray Moore presented plaques to the six dignitaries, including Senator Glenn McConnell, Senator Larry Grooms, Senator Danny Verdin, Senator Robert Ford, Kathy Crawford (representing Congressman Brown) and Bill Tuten (representing U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham). After the unveiling, all of the guests were given the opportunity to tour the conservation center, including viewing the actual Hunley submarine and facial reconstructions of the crewmembers on the Hunley's last voyage.

U-Haul chose the H.L. Hunley to represent South Carolina because since her recovery in August 2000, the Hunley has proven herself to be a marvel for both her time period and modern-day researchers. The craft's unexpectedly graceful and beautiful design may hold the key to unlocking the mysteries about its mysterious sinking.
