I am extremely concerned about the conditions at this location and would strongly recommend that U-Haul conduct an audit or inspection of the facility. I am fairly confident that someone is living out of a storage unit approximately two units down from the one we rented. A few months ago, I noticed that unit standing open with belongings spread into the hallway and assumed someone was simply moving things. When I recently returned to pick up my daughter’s belongings, much of the same stuff was still there, except this time there was clearly a man living out of or spending significant amounts of time in the unit. The condition of that hallway was absolutely disgusting. There was a partially used, dirty roll of toilet paper in the hallway, jars of peanut butter, trash, and other items apparently belonging to the person occupying that unit. Even worse, there was a bottle of urine sitting across the hallway from my unit. The entire hallway smelled like something was decomposing or rotting. The odor was so bad that I literally gagged and nearly threw up multiple times while trying to remove my daughter’s belongings. I also had to throw away my daughter’s approximately five-month-old, $300 mattress because it was covered in what appeared to be roach droppings and shed skins. That is completely unacceptable for a storage facility that customers are paying to keep their belongings in. I called U-Haul’s 800 number to report and discuss the situation, but I was passed off to another department rather than feeling like the issue was actually being addressed. What concerns me even more is that the individual apparently living out of the unit seems to know the employees and spends time in the office. I cannot say what the circumstances are, but given the condition of the facility, I believe U-Haul needs to independently investigate what is happening at this location rather than simply forwarding the complaint back to the same facility. I would absolutely never rent from this location again, and based on what I experienced, I could not recommend it to anyone else. Having to throw away a nearly new $300 mattress because of a roach infestation, while also dealing with human waste, trash, and an overwhelming odor in the hallway, is beyond unacceptable. I am still extremely upset that this was allowed to happen.
