The ONLY reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 stars was the check-out procedure: We cleaned out the storage unit on a Friday night after office hours. I followed the online directions for checking out, adding photos as requested, and took the lock with us. The online interface said that it may take up to 48 hours to get a response. Instead, we got a phone call to notify us that our unit did not have a lock and was empty. While I was happy to know that the unit was monitored and that someone cared enough to call to alert us, there was no mention of the online checkout procedure we followed to terminate our use of the unit. When I called the facility to clarify that we had indeed checked out following the online procedures, the response I got was that they don't even look at the online checkouts. In fact, whoever I spoke to told me that the online checkouts come to them in a batch. They don't have time to sort through them. He just wanted to get me off the phone as he said he was too busy. Then I was told that it would be better if I had stopped in the office or called to check out. I would have done this if I were told to check out this way... but the only guidance I had was to check out online. Please, to help your customers in the future, hand them a flyer that tells them not to check out online-only, in person, or by phone call. It would have saved us all some time and a great deal of anxiety!! After the phone call, I quickly received an email receipt that terminated the rental contract. I am grateful for that quick turnaround. Otherwise, I have to say that actually scheduling and setting up the rental of the unit online was more than convenient and so very flexible. Once we got to the facility, the young man who took care of us was so very helpful. They were out of locks when we checked in, and we were told that we should just go buy one and they would let us know when the new shipment of locks came in. This young man made sure we knew where our unit was and bent over backwards to help us. We were able to get an official U-Haul lock at a later date as promised.

The general manager of the facility is not friendly and is very unprofessional . I got kicked out of the storage area for the local police coming due to the alarm going off constantly. I wasn't in the unit itself but I was in the walkway area

The actual move-in went well, but getting the unit was an unrelenting, freaking nightmare. After my initial experience, if other storage facilities had been more suitable, I certainly would have gone elsewhere. My problem was resolved only by contacting the regional office. MY INITIAL EXPERIENCE: I had been looking for a unit at The Philo Road location for about four months, with no success. In August, with the U of I students about to return, the former manager said a unit was about to become available. On August 14, when he called to say the unit was open, I dashed over to U-HAUL, looked at the unit, took it, paid the first month's rent, set up autopay, and told you I would not move in until early September. Apparently, staff was supposed to put a temporary lock on the unit to indicate it was rented. This was not done. Had I been told, I would have put on my own lock. As a result, when counting open units after student move-outs, your staff listed my unit as unoccupied and available for rental. My contract was summarily cancelled August 18 WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE, and when I arrived to move a few things into my unit, you had no record of my contract or my having rented the unit. The new manager told me the unit had been occupied by someone else since 2002, an apparent "untruth." Having waited for a unit at that location for four months, and assuming the facility was now full again with no other units available, I told him he needed to fix the situation or I would call my lawyer. He said because I "used the 'L" word', " he could not/would not continue to speak with me. When asked, he told me to have my lawyer call the U-Haul lawyer to get the refund for the month's rent I had paid. He refused to accept an apology. I will save my remaining comments for a post on your website (and others.) For now, I will say your new manager behaved like an 8 year old in a situation that could have been diffused in 10 seconds had he told me there WERE other units still available. Instead, he was disrespectful, mocking, rude and unprofessional. This entire problem was the fault of U-Haul, your people made it worse, and I was entirely justified in my anger. I am also compelled to ask why your computer system did not flag my unit as rented four days earlier when you listed units available for new rentals, and why you did not inform me that my contract was summarily cancelled. Are you really so greedy that you put speedy profit over accuracy and customer service?
