What's included in my U-Box quote, and when do I pay?

Your U-Box quote gives you a clear breakdown of your move, including container rental, delivery, pickup, shipping, transit, and storage fees. You can also add optional services like Moving Help, packing supplies, and coverage plans.

Here’s when each charge is billed:

 

• At reservation: Moving Help services and packing supplies, if selected.
• At delivery: Your first month’s container rental, delivery fees, and SafeStor® coverage, if selected.
• Monthly: Container rental fees for any additional months you keep your container.
• Before shipping: Shipping charges and SafeHaul® coverage, if selected, are billed five days before your container’s scheduled arrival.

What are the dimensions of a U-Box container?

U-Box containers measure approximately 5' x 8' x 7.5' and can hold up to 257 cubic feet of belongings (up to 2,000 lbs.). That’s enough space for about a room and half of household items, including larger furniture like a king-sized mattress.

Are my items insured while in U-Box containers?

By default, your belongings are not insured while in transit or in storage. However, U-Haul offers optional coverage plans to help protect your items:

 

• SafeStor®: Covers your belongings while they're stored in U-Box containers at a U-Haul storage facility.
• SafeHaul®: Covers your belongings while they're being transported in U-Box containers.

How much does U-Box container insurance cost?

The cost of U-Box container coverage depends on the type and amount of protection you choose.

 

• SafeStor®: Coverage ranges from $8.95 to $40.95 per container, per month.
• SafeHaul®: Coverage ranges from $49.95 to $149.95 per container as a one-time charge.

 Pricing is based on the coverage level selected and is subject to change.

How much time do I have to load and unload my U-Box containers?

With U-Box containers, your moving timeline is completely up to you: you can take as much time as you need to load and unload.* 

You choose when your U-Box containers are delivered and picked up, whether you want them shipped or stored, and when you'll be ready to have them delivered for unloading at your final destination. 

U-Box containers can also be used for short-term or long-term storage, whether that's at your place or a secure U-Haul storage facility.

What items are not allowed in U-Box containers?

The following items are prohibited from being placed in U-Box containers:

• Living organisms
• Flammable/combustible liquids (gasoline, alcohol, paint thinner, etc.)
• Hazardous materials (corrosives, bleach, ammonia, etc.)
• Compressed gases (propane tanks, oxygen/acetylene tanks, scuba diving tanks, etc.)
• Perishables (plants, produce, food, etc.)
• Explosives (ammunition, fireworks, firearms, etc.)

Motorized items (motorcycles, ATVs, riding lawnmowers, etc.) cannot be placed in a U-Box container unless all oils, fuel, and liquids have been drained from the engine.

Do I need to purchase a lock for my U-Box containers?

Yes, you will need a lock for each of your U-Box containers, we do not provide them. Most padlocks work with U-Box containers, but we recommend the U-Haul 1-9/16" Brass Security Lock, which is available at most local U-Haul centers.

For added peace of mind, only you will have access to your keys or lock combination. U-Haul employees do not have access to them.

What are U-Box containers made out of?

U-Haul offers two U-Box container models:

1. A steel-framed container with engineered composite panels
2. A high-quality, pest-resistant plywood container paired with a durable, weather-resistant vinyl cover

Both containers are nearly identical in size and weather resistance and are designed with airflow in mind to help reduce moisture buildup. For more information on the size and dimensions of a U-Box container, check out our U-Box Dimensions guide.

Are there differences between U-Box container models?

No. All U-Box containers meet the same high standards for protecting your belongings and offer the same great moving and storage experience. There is no price difference between models, and specific models cannot be requested, as availability varies by location.

How do I know how many U-Box containers I will need?

The number of U-Box containers you'll need depends on both the size of your home and how much you are planning to move. One U-Box container typically fits about a room and a half of items. Here's a quick guide to help you estimate:

Are U-Box containers stored in a climate-controlled warehouse?

While U-Box containers are not stored in climate-controlled warehouses, they are stored indoors in clean, dry, and secure U-Haul facilities that are insulated to help protect your belongings from extreme temperatures.

Will U-Haul load my U-Box containers for me?

Moving Help, which is powered by U-Haul, connects customers with local moving labor professionals who can load or unload your U-Box containers. When you reserve your U-Box containers, you get to choose your own Moving Help Service Providers based off customer reviews and prices, so you can find one that fits your budget and needs.

If you already have a U-Box container reservation and would like to add movers from the Moving Help Marketplace, you can enter your U-Box order number on the Moving Help Quote Tool to see what options are available.

How do I modify or cancel my existing U-Box reservation?

You can make most changes online through your U-Haul Account or in the U-Haul App, including updating your pickup dates, adding or removing containers, and changing damage coverage options.

 Need assistance or want to cancel? Just text “Help” to 1-800-664-5017 and a live representative will assist you. There is no fee to cancel your reservation.

How long does it take for my U-Box® containers to arrive at my destination?

Delivery times vary based on factors like distance and route, but most U-Box shipments arrive within 7–14 business days. When you book online at uhaul.com, you'll receive a guaranteed arrival date, so you’ll know exactly when your containers will be available at your final destination.

Is my U-Box shipping arrival date guaranteed?

Yes, your quoted shipping timeframe and arrival date at your destination is guaranteed. If we fail to meet the promised date, we guarantee a $50 refund for every day it is late up to the total cost of shipping.

The guarantee is always $50 per day regardless of the number of U-Box containers being shipped. For example, if three U-Box containers are shipped and they arrive one day late, the total refund would be $50 per day.

Can I store my U-Box containers long-term? Is there a fee to access them while in storage?

Yes, U-Box containers can be stored for as long as you need at our secure U-Haul storage facilities. Like a traditional self-storage unit, you'll pay a monthly rental fee while your containers are in storage.

There is no fee to access your containers while in storage, and many locations can accommodate same-day or next-day access.

How do I schedule delivery or shipment of my U-Box containers in storage?

Schedule delivery, shipment, or container access through your U-Haul Account or U-Haul App by selecting your reservation. For assistance, text “Help” to 1-800-664-5017 to connect with a live representative who can help arrange delivery, transportation, or access to your containers.

Where can U-Box containers be placed?

U-Box containers can be placed anywhere that’s flat, level, and accessible by a forklift. Most commonly, U-Box containers are placed in driveways, parking spaces, side yards, or curbside on a street. 

1-2 U-Box containers can also be towed on one of our custom-fitted U-Box trailers, which can be legally parked anywhere a vehicle can.

Be sure to check with your city or HOA to confirm where container placement is allowed.

Can I split up U-Box container deliveries if I don’t have space for all of them?

Yes, but separate delivery fees will apply. After making your reservation, contact us by texting 'help' to 1-800-664-5017 and we can assist with scheduling multiple deliveries for your containers.

Do I need a permit to store my U-Box containers on my property?

Permit requirements vary depending on your local city regulations or HOA rules. We recommend checking with your city or homeowners association to find out if a permit is needed for your U-Box containers.

What is a weight ticket, and how do I get one?

A weight ticket is required for a Personally Procured Move (PPM), often used by active-duty military members. Just let us know you’re completing a PPM, and we’ll provide both empty and full weight tickets.

What is an Invasive Pest Inspection Form?

To prevent the spread of the invasive Spongy Moth and Spotted Lanternfly, an Invasive Pest Inspection Form is required if you are shipping your U-Box containers to California.

How do international U-Box container moves work?

U-Box containers can be shipped to almost any destination worldwide. Depending on availability, you can choose delivery to a destination port or directly to your door. Simply pack your containers, complete an inventory of their contents, and we’ll help prepare them for shipment.

What documentation and customs requirements apply to international U-Box container moves?

Documentation requirements vary by destination country. If you choose door delivery service, U-Haul’s preferred customs partner will assist with customs documentation, clearance, and delivery. If you choose port delivery service, you’ll be responsible for arranging your own customs agent.

 You must also be present in your destination country or have proof of travel arrangements before your shipment can be initiated.

Can I store my U-Box containers in the destination country?

We have a large network of partners across the globe that can accommodate storage in most destination countries. Please inquire with an international shipping team member for custom rates and options to be included in your shipping quote after you submit a request.

Do I need to provide documentation to ship my U-Box containers between the U.S. and Canada?

Yes, all U-Haul International customers moving between the U.S. and Canada must complete customs paperwork and provide the following documents: 

Required documentation: 

• Copy of your passport (and passports for all traveling family members) 
• Secondary government-issued photo ID for anyone age 16 or older 
• Proof of residency in the destination country 
• Valued Inventory Sheet (provided by U-Haul) 
• Customer Contact Sheet (provided by U-Haul) 

Do I need to complete an inventory of the contents of my U-Box containers to ship them between the U.S. and Canada?

The Canadian CBSA and US CBP border patrol agencies require a completed inventory of items loaded in your U-Box container(s). We will provide you with an inventory form that you can complete while you pack and load. The inventory is uploaded along with all other customs documentation in your secure documentation portal.

How do I complete an inventory for my international move?

Any international move requires a detailed inventory of what is packed in your U-Box containers. The inventory is required by the customs authority of your destination country and the requirements may vary. After a reservation for your international move is created, you will be supplied with the specific inventory form required by your destination country.

What is included in a U-Haul International “Location to Port” move?

A U-Haul International Location-to-Port move covers the main services needed to get your U-Box® containers from a U-Haul location in the U.S. to the destination port. 

What’s included: 

• Loading your U-Box containers at the selected U-Haul location 
• Up to 30 days of storage at the origin location (no charge) 
• Domestic transportation to the U.S. port of export 
• U.S. export processing and customs formalities 
• Ocean freight to the destination port or CFS (Container Freight Station) 

What’s not included: 

• Customs exams and related inspection fees 
• Destination terminal and CFS fees 
• Destination customs clearance and document services 
• Duties and taxes 
• Inland delivery or transportation at destination 
• Storage at destination 
• U-Box container removal services 
• Transit insurance 
• Specialty services (see Terms and Conditions) 

What is included in a U-Haul International “Location to Door” move?

A U-Haul International Location-to-Door move includes end-to-end service to transport your U-Box® containers from a U-Haul location in the U.S. to your residence in the destination country. 

What’s included: 

• Loading your U-Box containers at the selected U-Haul location 
• Up to 30 days of free storage at the origin location 
• Domestic transportation to the U.S. port of export 
• U.S. export processing and customs formalities 
• Ocean freight to the destination port or CFS 
• Destination terminal handling charges (DTHC) 
• Standard customs clearance with documentation assistance 
• Delivery to your residence 
• U-Box container removal 

  

What’s not included: 

• Customs exams and inspection-related fees 
• Duties and taxes 
• Specialty services (see Terms and Conditions) 
• Stair carry, long carry, elevator, or shuttle services 
• Unloading, unpacking, or furniture assembly

What items are prohibited from being shipped internationally in U-Box containers?

The following items are prohibited from being packed inside of U-Box containers for international shipment: 

Food, agricultural, and biological items 

Any food products (fresh, canned, loose, or packaged), spices, tea, coffee, condiments, plants, seeds, bulbs, firewood, hunting trophies, or any living organisms. 

Medical, drug, and tobacco products 

Medicine, pharmaceuticals, narcotics, alcohol, and tobacco products. 

Weapons and vehicles 

Firearms, ammunition, explosives, weapons of any kind, and motorized vehicles. 

Hazardous materials 

Corrosives; flammable or combustible items; oxidizers; poisons; pressurized or liquefied containers; aerosols; and household cleaners or chemicals. (Includes gasoline, paint, bleach, fertilizers, pesticides, propane tanks, fireworks, spray products, etc.) 

Restricted or non-declared items 

Any items for someone not listed on the customs form, and any additional prohibited items specified on your customs information sheet for your destination.
