Step-by-Step: How to Reserve a Self-Storage Unit
Download and Open the U-Haul App
To begin your storage reservation, download the U-Haul App from your device's app store if you don’t already have it installed. Open the app, then sign in or create a free U-Haul account to access self-storage and start your reservation.

Search for a Storage Unit Near You
From the Home Tab (tap the “Home” icon at the bottom of the screen), locate the section titled “Products and Services”. Scroll through the available options until you see “Storage”, then select it to start searching for self-storage at U-Haul.
Next, you’ll be asked to enter key details, including your location, the storage unit size you need, and the type of storage you prefer. Choosing the right type of storage is important. For example, you can select from options like:
- Outdoor/Drive Up
- Online Move-In/Rent Now

You can also adjust your storage unit size and type later in the reservation process if your needs change. Once you are finished entering your storage preferences, tap “Find Storage”.
Select Your Storage
After tapping “Find Storage”, the app will display a list of available storage options near you. Here, you can compare location, prices, features, and availability.
You can view these options in list or map view based on your preference. To switch views, select either “List” or “Map” in the upper right-hand corner. You can also filter or sort your search results by tapping “Filter/Sort” in the upper left-hand corner, selecting your preferences, and then scrolling down and selecting “Apply” to lock in your filters.
Once you decide on a location, select “View Rates”. Here, you can view the location’s available services and units. After browsing your options, select “Reserve” under your desired selection. The app will then prompt you to select your move-in date. Once you enter this, tap “Add to Cart” to save your selections in your shopping cart.

Select Coverage Options
After adding your selections to your cart, you can add storage unit insurance coverage like Safestor®. This helps protect your belongings during your rental period and can cover loss or damage for certain items.
Confirm Reservation Details and Check Out
After selecting your coverage options, you will be taken to your shopping cart, where you can review all your storage reservation details before heading to check out.
Once everything looks good, tap “Check Out”.
You will now be prompted to enter a couple of important details, such as billing information and payment information. U-Haul does not charge you to make a storage reservation, you pay when you move into your storage unit. You can always cancel your reservation at no cost.
The final step is to review the terms and conditions and confirm your order. Make sure you double check all your information and reservation details before confirming.
If you need to change or manage reservation details later, you can also manage your reservation in the U-Haul App.
Tips for a Smooth Storage Move-In
- Label your boxes clearly for easier access later
- Pack heavier items on the bottom to prevent damage
