Welcome to the City of Four Lakes! Madison, Wisconsin

Located in the northern Midwest region, Madison is the capital city of Wisconsin and home to more than 240,000 people. That makes it the second largest city in Wisconsin, just behind Milwaukee. When it comes to the climate, if you ask any locals, they will tell you that Madison is no stranger to below freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall during the winter months. Temperatures rise into low 90’s during the summer months; and the humidity has been known to make it feel even hotter than it really is. Madison is known by many as ‘The City of Four Lakes,’ simply because there are four lakes which spawn off of the Yahara River – Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, Lake Waubesa, and Lake Kegonsa.

Want some tips for your move to Madison? Here you go!

With 10 truck rental locations within the city of Madison alone, we are dedicated to helping you make the smoothest move possible.

  • Buy into the Community - Madison has ten main neighborhood sectors. Each has their own established communities with different cultures and varying housing characteristics. The Capitol sits on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, and the Tenney-Lapham and Williamson-Marquette neighborhoods are just northeast of the Capitol. Here is where you can find mansions on lakefront property, historic and contemporary housing and tight-knit communities. Most downtown neighborhoods have been standing since the 1850’s, and the residents who live here truly do care about you as a neighbor. If you have young children, it is wise to check into what school district your new home is in.
  • Schooling – If you have children who still need early education, some of the higher rated elementary schools in Madison include: Shorewood Hills, Randall Elementary, Van Hise, Marquette and Stoner Prairie Elementary. If your kids are out of elementary but still in junior high or high school, West High School is consistently a top ranking school as well as Middleton and Waunakee High Schools.
  • College Bound – Founded in 1848, the University of Wisconsin-Madison claims the title as the largest college in Madtown, with enrollment averages of more than 40,000 students per year. Being the most prestigious of all the UW campuses, UW Madison is a highly selective research focused university, offering more than 130 undergraduate majors, 149 master degrees and 120 doctoral degree programs. UW Madison is also included in NCAA’s Division I Big Ten Conference which competes in 25 separate intercollegiate sports. Attend a Badgers football game this fall and you can ‘Jump Around’ at Camp Randall Stadium with roughly 80,000 fans in attendance – “On Wisconsin!” Many students who are enrolling at UW Madison next semester find that renting a 10ft moving truck is ideal for the amount of belongings they bring with them. If you have a lot of stuff, a 14ft truck may be a better option as it includes extra storage in the Mom’s Attic®.
  • Help for All Seasons – Madison expects snow fall each year. If your lease is up and you are moving to Madison between the months of October and March, you may want to look into hiring Moving Help®. You can hire Moving Helpers® to unload your belongings from the rental truck and bring everything into your home. It’s one way to bypass one of the harder parts of moving, and possibly the coldest part too!
  • Meet the City – You can feel at home in no time with the numerous events and festivals that are held in/around Madison each year. Some of the more notable festivals include: the Waterfront Festival, Willy St. Fair, Summerfest, Greekfest, the WORT block party, Sugar Maple Music festival and the Isthmus Jazz festival. Many of these events have live music, seasonal food and drinks as well as a family friendly setting allowing you to create unforgettable memories. Chazen Museum of Art and Madison Museum of Contemporary Art are two more great attractions that you can experience, both located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The Olbrich Botanical Gardens and the Cave of Mounds are also great options for outdoor activities and family-friendly fun. Last but not least, the Henry Vilas Zoo and Aldo Leopold Nature Center are always options for the family as both are educational and informative.
